BUW reanimator: Open the Vault

I kept seeing people playing this over the last week. I just kinda guessed at how many of whatever card they were running. Maybe could use a tweak. But this thing is a beast. It is super fun to play. It is more fun than empty the warrens combo back in the day, and that is probably the funnest deck I played.

Looks something like this:

4 Architects of Will
4 Courier's Capsule
4 Day of Judgment
3 Everflowing Chalice
2 Fieldmist Borderpost
3 Filigree Angel
4 Glassdusk Hulk
2 Jace, the Mind Sculptor
2 Mistvein Borderpost
3 Open the Vault
1 Sharuum the Hegemon
4 Sphinx of Lost Truths
2 Sphinx of the Steel Wind

4 Arcane Sanctum
2 Celestial Colonnade
1 Drowned Catacomb
4 Glacial Fortress
4 Island
3 Plains
4 Swamp

board
3 celestial purge
3 flashfreeze
4 kor firewalker
1 martial coup
4 negate

Here's some things to tweak:

Brilliant Ultamedeum (looks better than I first thought because I have a low land count, I have a bomb planeswalker, and I have 6 great creatures. that means there is probably one really good card that costs 4-8 mana to hardcast which i can get. still, i wouldn't even bother testing this unless someone else thinks its a good idea. seems like i could be better off with something like mind spring if i want some cards).

mind spring: helps me draw into answers, and discard into open the vaults.

ethersworn adjucator: he looks pretty good. maybe -1 sphinx of the steel wind +1 of this guy.

negate or cancel: probably a good idea and helps me get my combo off vs control.

the UWB charm: draw, discard (target me or opp), kill ench, instant speed

tezeret: don't see how he is bad for this deck, and he might randomly win me a game, but then again my good artifact stuff costs more than he can easily fetch. seems pretty conditional. i am probably wrong about him. might be worth testing.

o-ring: pretty versatile. probably should at least be in my board.

my board is hate against RDW, cause that's pretty hard. Other choices there are Dragon's Claw or Vedalken Outlander. Or I could just have a more balanced board with one of the cards listed above. get a pithing needle, tezzeret, other cheap artifact toolbox effect.

A toolbox deck needs needs tutors to find the answers it needs. Otherwise you're just watering down your card choices with 1x and 2x of situational cards, leading to very random draws. You could possibly work some kind of toolbox deck with enough card draw or deep enough dig, but it will still be fairly unreliable. The only worthy tutors right now are Tezzeret and Vess, neither of which I'm fond of. They're both expensive and/or slow to get the higher cost answers you're running.

I don't like Brilliant Ultimatum. It seems like you'd be better off just hardcasting one of your bombs, playing more protection or card draw.

I like the Adjudicator and Scourglass, I just wish there was a way to sneak them into play at the end of your opponent's turn.

As for counters, charm & card draw, it really depends on the format you'll be playing against. They all seem to have their merits but they're the kind of support cards that look good on paper but need to be tested.

I would suggest some w/b fetch lands to reset the top of your library after dropping an Architects or brainstorming with Jace.

Good ideas. Marsh Flats is pretty smart. I could refine the SB for a toolbox solutions to include 4x fabricate for more tutoring. that gives six ways to get stuff. and with the pyromatter powder (whatever it's called) i can -3 from tez, get that powder, pay 5 to reanimate something from the yard. Of course if i did that all on one turn it'd be 10 mana. Or i could do it for five and have the artifact sitting there ready to pop next turn. Not quick, but not a bad use of tez. I can fabricate out a summoner sphinx and then get shar-whatever, the legendary guy that reanimates. it looks like there are enough pieces to build a decent SB for toolboxing, and either add most of the toolbox components and take out the stuff like architects and hulks, or just add the piece i need (like the graveyard remover, or the pithing needle, both are easy to get with tez, and can completely change the momentum of the game.

maybe can't beat rdw or the naya-cascade game one, pretty much ever, the SB now doesn't have specific answers for those (like the firewalkers or outlanders or celestial purge) but it is a more generic SB with more generic answers, and is pretty user-friendly, too. Lots of top-decking possibilities. Top-decking a fabricate with ten mana available and i'm about to lose unless i do something cool is fun.

Open the vaults pretty much stays in anyway. it is still going to be better for me in any long-lasting game than for my opponent. maybe take it out for game 3 vs vampires or rdw in favor of more stuff to help me live through turn five. but then again, i don't really have any good answers for vampires or naya in my board, so maybe not.

Lol, I was just looking through gatherer for suggestions and Protomatter Powder was the first one I'd come across.

Here's the list:
Protomatter Powder
Rise from the Grave
Sphinx Summoner
Sen Triplets (drok found that one)

Not a long list, and the summoner isn't that hot, but they're some ideas.

Also Deathgreeter in play + Sharuum in graveyard + Sharuum being cast = fun.
