Mid-range aggro-burn/control: make it through the early game by burning guys to death and drawing cards of ponder and mulldrifter, then take over the late game with Card Advantage + Big Shrouded Creatures + Burn. Razerunners are kind of not that good in this deck, maybe? Maybe Murderous Redcap? Seige-Gang Commander? Razormane Masticore? Sower of Temptation? Caldera Hellion? Even Mindwrack Leige to give all my creatures flash? Ok, probably not Mindwrack Leige, and maybe I'm underestimating the razerunners?
Is it just me, or did Ponder seem like a better choice back when I was trying to work a combo deck out of this? I'm not saying Ponder isn't good. I'm not even saying it shouldn't go in this decklist. I'm just a little unsure about it, since ponder doesn't really shout Mid-range Burn to me. But then again, I don't have the experience with it you do, D-Rok, so correct me if I'm wrong. I was just thinking maybe mindstone, or some other "better" draw card, ie. more than one card.
The sideboard is good for counter-control and for weanie/tokens. If I get into a top-decking situation, I'm probably already in trouble, and this sideboard isn't really going to help (with the exception of topdecking a needle the turn before ajani goes off, maybe), but it does keep me alive longer in the hard and faster aggro matchups.

I like a lot of the ideas for this deck. UR Control seems to me to be really fun and I bet we could do some really fun and interesting things to do with it.
I'm going to wreck this deck apart and opt for some massive changes while keeping the core of the deck the same. This has a lot to do with the Meta. We can make this deck slower and force it to wreck total havoc on the weenie meta game.
-1 Taurean Mauler
-3 Gilder Bairn
-3 Fate Transfer
-4 Negate
-4 Cancel
-3 Jace Beleren
+4 Ponder
+4 Volcanic Fallout
+4 Flame Javelin
+4 Incinerate
+2 Cloak and Dagger / Whispersilk Cloak
mauler + cloak & dagger is the coolest 2 card combo i never knew about! it rocks!
So, basically, you want me to take out the crappy combo cards and play with good cards?
I like the suggestions a lot. I especially enjoy a huge shroud creature for three mana. I especially love playing burn + mulldrifter. I especially love playing decks that maindeck volcanic fallout, flame javelin and Incinerate. Yah!
I think this looks like massive amounts of FUN to play. It might be a winner, or not, but either way you're going to enjoy playing this thing. I will begin collecting them right away! Pretty much the only rares I'd need are the lands and the maulers!
BAsically yes, Bad combo cards replaced with good board control = teh win.
glad you like the suggestions.
I have 1x Taurean Mauler and the C. Commands of Course.
Also have 2x Shivan Reefs
For your final Sideboard Slot, Pithing Needle?
Also for SB I prefer something like:
4x Guttural Response
4x Flashfreeze
4x Pyroclasm
3x Pithing Needle
This gives you SB cards for control, burn, weenie, and PWs
I have 1 Shivan Reef. That makes 3 in total. Needle is a fairly good choice. Negate may be better? Or, get this, Guttural Response? Hahahahahaha!
hey, we both thought of guttural response :)
heheh I are faster.
I like your board suggestions, too. Plus, I have those cards already.
Definately looks like a fun deck. we gotta find Cascade bluffs, I dont think anyone is playing UR Swans so we should be able to get them.
Hopefully Zors and David can bring some thoughts in on this too. it may still need some tuning overall.
could also go with sower in the SB btw. maybe as a replacement to pyroclasm as a 3 of and then move needle to 4 of.
I found a nicol bolas planeswalker in the pack I won last FNM, so maybe someone will want that (cause I don't).
You dont have anything to do turn 1 so that makes ponder better. Im a huige fan of ponder in mid-range control because it can set up your draws to ensure you hit land drops and when need and have the control pieces at the right time.
awesome, according to findmagiccards.com
1x Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker = 3x Cascade Bluffs
Yuppers. I may even have 1 cascade bluff already. Probably not, but maybe.
Lulz at new title!
need to change the label of RB Burn to RU burn B= Black U= Blue
I'm Proxying this up right now btw
So after a little bit of goldfishing, I have decided that you are right sean and I dont like Razerunners. Im not sure of the replacement, but any of the following could potentially be good:
+1 Mauler
+2 Masticore
+1 Mauler
+2 Siege-Gang Commander
+1 Mauler
+2 Oona, Queen of the Fae
+3 Goblin Assault
+3 Sower of Temptation
+3 Masticore
+3 Siege-Gang Commander
or maybe +3 V. Clique?
-3 Razerunners +3 Vendilion Clique seems good.
And then I see that I have 4 fallouts maindeck and four pyroclasms in the board, and I am thinking I want to play a creature with a toughness of three or more...
Did someone say Sygg? Surely not...No...no...nonono...But...I need you to talk me out of this...
This deck is currently set at 14 creatures. 10 of them are likely to actually be on the board at any time and all of them will come down after Sygg. If you feel like you need a Lightning Rod, that is about the only reason I can see to have Sygg in this deck. Even So, there are better Lightning Rods that could be played in its place. FoD, Mogg Fanatic, Cursecatcher, Glen Elandra Archmage, Sower of Temptation, Vendillion Clique, Murderous Redcap, Mudbutton Torchrunner, PlumeVeil Siege-Gang, and Masticore are all better, because they are more likely to actually DO SOMETHING. This is what sygg does:
Turn 2: hi I'm Sygg!
Opponent's turn: O.Ring (if white), Incinerate ( if red), Nameless Inversion (if Black), Laugh (if blue)
yeah...but did you see that he's a rogue? So lightning rod he isn't. He's a 3/3 guy...that just sits there. For 2 mana.
I readily admit he's not good, in the sense that there are good cards, mediocre cards, and bad cards. He's probably toward the high end of bad cards. The only creatures I like better are Seige-gang, redcapp, and masticore. And they cost a lot more, but they actually are threats, not just potential card advantage. I do think it should be something good, not something bad.
Still, if Sygg went in any deck, it'd almost be this one. He'd like more lash outs and blightnings.
I have been goldfishing, and I think -4 incinerate, + 4 negate, -3 razerunner, +3 glen elandra archmage. I think it just needs more control.
Hrm, do you think this deck can go grixis instead so that instead of negate we can be playing with Countersquall? Just seems to me that countersquall is strictly better than negat in decks that can play it. dunno if this deck can play it or not though.
if we went grixis, we could play bitterblossom & grixis charm, too.
What do you think about 2x banefire in the maindeck, somewhere?
We'll never have enough mana to make good use of Banefire.
hrm, -4 Expanse
-4 Island
-4 Incinerate
-3 Goblin Razerunners
+4 Graven Cairns
+4 Sunken Ruins
+4 Countersquall
+3 Grixis Charm
